What is AVID?

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled elective program based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaborative grouping. The program places special emphasis on college academic preparation in developing writing skills, critical thinking, collaborative teamwork, organization, and reading skills.

Who is an AVID student?

The AVID elective is for students in the academic middle who have an interest in attending college but need academic support.

What is the AVID Criteria?

Although the following criteria is named, all students are encouraged to apply. Students are individually assessed and accepted by their application and interview by the school AVID team. Candidates for AVID are identified according to general criteria as follows:

• Desire and Determination - desire to attend college, good attendance record and willingness to undertake rigorous academic preparation for college enrollment.
• Ability - students possess academic potential to succeed in college preparatory courses. (preferred GPA range approximately 2.0-3.5)

What are the Benefits of being an AVID Student?

• Students are often with the same group of students throughout their middle school & high school career and are able to build strong relationships with peers with similar academic goals.
• Over 90% of CCSD AVID students are accepted to a 4 year college/university.
• AVID graduates complete college at a higher rate than non- AVID students. You can see national AVID data here (this will take you outside of the CCSD website).
• Students learn rigorous academic skills and strategies to support successful achievement throughout their high school career and beyond.
• Students receive extensive information regarding the college and financial aid application processes.
• Students experience a variety of college and career field trip tours and engage in opportunities for discussion with career professionals in deciding upon career and college planning paths.
