CCSD Athletics: Highlights from the week of March 3, 2025

Grandview Girls Basketball Team6A Girls State Basketball: Grandview makes the Final Four 

The Grandview Wolves girls basketball team is headed to the 6A Colorado State Final Four. The Wolves won twice this past week to advance.

On March 5, first-seeded Grandview hosted No. 16 Rocky Mountain. The Wolves took care of business with a 56-43 win over the Lobos. On Saturday, the Wolves went up against No. 8 Denver East in Great 8 play at the Denver Coliseum. GHS again had a solid effort on the way to a 54-32 victory.

The Wolves will next play 5th-seeded Pine Creek in a Final Four matchup at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 13 at the Coliseum. O

Fourth-seeded Cherry Creek won its way to the Great 8 with an 83-38 victory over No. 13 Columbine last Wednesday evening. However, the Bruins’ season came to an end on Saturday with a 38-33 loss to No. 5 Pine Creek. Cherry Creek ends their season at 18-8.

Finally, No. 11 Cherokee Trail was eliminated on the road by No. 6 Highlands Ranch on March 5. The Cougars finish the 2024-25 campaign at 15-10.

EHS Boys Basketball Team after Great 8 game6A Boys State Basketball: Eaglecrest advances to the Final Four

The Eaglecrest Raptors boys basketball team is also headed to the Final Four, after getting two wins last week to qualify.

On March 4, the Raptors defeated a tough Arvada West team 71-61 at the Nest. Eaglecrest led by only 3 points over the No. 15 Wildcats entering the fourth quarter but pulled away to secure the ten point win. Then it was on to the Coliseum in Denver on Saturday for a Great 8 matchup with No. 7 ThunderRidge. Eaglecrest led by 3 going to the fourth quarter but outscored the Grizzlies 20-7 in the final session for the 70-54 win.

The Raptors will play No. 6 Mountain Vista at 12:45 p.m. on March 13 at the Coliseum.

22nd-seeded Overland - after a huge first-round win at Broomfield - was ousted by Mountain Vista on the road in the Sweet 16 last Tuesday by a score of 88-77 in double overtime. The Blazers were even at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime. But Vista outscored OHS 13-2 in the second OT session. The Trailblazers finish the season at 11-14 overall.

No. 25 Grandview was also eliminated in the round of 16, falling to No. 9 Regis Jesuit by a score of 59-56 in a close, tough ballgame that also went to overtime. The Wolves end their season at 14-12.

5A Track And Field Aurora City Championships 5A Girls and Boys Track and Field: CCSD competes in Aurora Championships

Girls and boys track and field clubs from six CCSD high schools were part of the field for the 2025 Aurora City Championships, held on March 8 at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.

Brisk temperatures delayed the start of events by an hour, but the sun was bright and there was little wind, making for a perfect day to stage one of the big events of the early season. Fifteen teams participated, from Aurora, Centennial, and Denver.

For the girls, Cherry Creek took overall team honors with Eaglecrest finishing second, and Cherokee Trail third. Grandview came in fourth, Smoky Hill was fifth, and Overland placed eighth.

On the boys’ side, CT took home top team honors, followed by Grandview in second, Creek in fourth, and Eaglecrest in fifth place. Overland took seventh and Smoky Hill finished eighth.

SHHS Unified Basketball White SquadUnified State Basketball: Smoky Hill wins multiple crowns

The Smoky Hill Unified basketball program participated in the Colorado State Unified Basketball Tournament, hosted by Special Olympics Colorado last Friday at Gold Crown Field House in Lakewood. The Buffaloes put forward two squads, Smoky Hill White and Smoky Hill Green, for the competition.

SHHS Unified Basketball Green SquadSmoky White got wins over Windsor in the semifinals and defeated Poudre in the title game. Smoky Green defeated Riverdale Ridge and Northridge for their crown.

Prior to play, the Smoky Hill Unified Athletics program was awarded the 2025 Chaka Sutton Unified School of the Year for the state of Colorado. The award is named after the 25-year Senior Vice President of Sports for Special Olympics Colorado.

“It’s pretty awesome,” said Smoky Hill Unified Coordinator and Coach Kelton Coppinger. “It’s a pretty big accomplishment. It’s validation of all the hard work of my coaches and the athletes and my administration team. There was so much support, we couldn’t have gotten to this point without them as well.”

The award includes Smoky Hill’s induction into the Special Olympics Colorado Hall of Fame, with a ceremony later this fall.
