5A Girls and Boys Wrestling: Tourneys abound
District wrestlers garnered solid results in tournaments across the metro area this past weekend.
On the girls’ side, Overland took first place team honors at the Raven Rumble hosted by Denver South on Jan. 11. The Blazers bettered Thornton and Berthoud, while Smoky Hill tied for seventh.
Individually, Overland junior Mihret Shimels was champion at 105 pounds, sophomore Isabella Taylor was runner-up at 120 pounds, junior Dureti Abdulkadir placed second at 145 pounds, and senior Ruth Worknhe was champion at 235 pounds.
At the Vista Ridge Alpha Female Tournament in Colorado Springs, Eaglecrest took third overall in the team standings.
Individually, Raptors junior Emma Roberts took second at 235 pounds in the Gold Division.
For the boys, Grandview took overall team honors at the Arvada West Invitational, edging out Pomona and Windsor.
Individual performances saw Wolves sophomore Kyle Menuez take second at 113 pounds; sophomore JR Ortega was champion at 120 pounds, sophomore Braxton Widrikis took second place at 144 pounds; junior Jonathan Montes Gonzales, was runner-up at 150 pounds; junior Gunner Lopez was champion at 157 pounds; senior Charlie Herting, earned champion honors at 175 pounds; and sophomore Leland Day took the top podium spot at 285 pounds.
Cherokee Trail finished second in overall team honors at the War Horse Invitational hosted by Chatfield High School. The host Chargers finished first, with Brush finishing third. Grandview took 11th.
Individually, CT freshman Elijah Van Horn took the top podium spot at 106 pounds, with sophomore Charlie Rider coming in second; sophomore Cooper Mathews was champion at 113 pounds, and brother-and senior-Chance Mathews was champion at 138 pounds. Junior Ryan Everhart came in second at 150 pounds.
Finally, Eaglecrest hosted the Armando Rodriguez Tournament of Champions last weekend. 30-plus schools participated, and the host Raptors finished 13th overall, Smoky Hill was 24th, and Overland placed 34th in the team standings.
The 2025 State Wrestling Championships will take place Feb. 13-15 at Ball Arena in Denver.
Girls Swimming: Cherokee Trail takes top honors at Smoky Hill Invite
The Cherokee Trail girls swim team took the top podium spot in the team standings this past Saturday at the Smoky Hill Invite hosted by the Buffs. Heritage was second, and Cherry Creek took third overall. Eaglecrest finished eighth.
Individual events saw Cherry Creek take the 200-yard medley relay, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay; Smoky Hill junior Cameryn Walkup took top honors in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events; fellow junior and teammate Mya Noffsinger won the 200-yard individual medley; Cherry Creek sophomore Jenna Fernstrom took first place in the 110-yard butterfly; and Cherokee Trail senior Ava Zadigan was the winner in the 100-yard backstroke.
The 5A Girls Swimming and Diving Championships will take place Feb. 6-7 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC) in Thornton.
