The 22nd annual Rich Morrow Math Challenge was held on Dec. 3rd at Falcon Creek Middle School. Nearly 300 students in third through fifth grade, from 30 Cherry Creek schools, participated in this wonderful math event (created and run by teachers and parents from Challenge School), and over 100 volunteers helped make the event a success.
The day started with everyone gathering for a "kickoff" speech from contest coordinator and Challenge School math teacher Matt Bixby. Then students headed to classrooms for the individual rounds, filled with challenging questions like "Julia is thinking of a number. Seven less than three times her number is 17. What is her number?" After that, each grade-level team worked together on a series of tough "team questions." The final round was the "relay round," in which each grade-level team worked on one part of 15 multi-part questions and passed their answer to the next grade-level team (in another classroom.) That team then used that answer to complete their part of each question. The relay round is the most challenging (and the most fun and chaotic) round of the competition.
Cherry Hills Village, Rolling Hills, and Holly Hills elementary schools won the top school awards, which are based on their combined scores on the individual, team, and relay rounds. The top individual award this year was an unprecedented four-way tie between two fourth graders and two fifth graders! Congratulations to Noah Liu from Challenge School, Victoria Yue and Andrew Liu from Cottonwood Creek Elementary, and Cameron Sheikh from Cherry Hills Village Elementary.
Participating CCSD elementary schools this year were Altitude, Antelope Ridge, Aspen Crossing, Buffalo Trail, Challenge School, Cherry Hill Village, Cimarron, Cottonwood, Coyote Hills, Dakota Valley, Dry Creek, Fox Hollow, Greenwood, Heritage, Highline, Holly Hills, Independence, Indian Ridge, Mission Viejo, Mountain Vista, Peakview, Red Hawk Ridge, Rolling Hills, Sagebrush, Sunrise, Timberline, Trails West, Walnut Hills, Willow Creek, and Woodland.
